Battery ready: what the inverter brochure does not tell you
The phrase appears in almost every quote landing in homes across Xàtiva, Moixent or Ontinyent these days: installation prepared for a battery. Sometimes it means real forward planning, sometimes just a line of marketing. It pays to know the difference before you sign.

One phrase, too many meanings
Prepared for a battery can mean your installation carries a hybrid inverter that a battery simply plugs into tomorrow. It can mean space, cabling and protections have been left in place to make the job easy. Or it can mean, simply, that some way of adding batteries exists, which is true of almost any photovoltaic installation in the world. All three read exactly the same in a brochure.
The difference lies not in the phrase but in the technical detail underneath it. And that detail decides how much it will cost you, in money and in works, the day you choose to take the step.
The two routes: hybrid inverter, or grid inverter plus a later converter
A hybrid inverter manages the panels and the battery in a single unit. The battery connects directly to it, on the DC side, and the same device decides at every moment whether energy goes to the house, the battery or the grid. Installed today without a battery, it works as a normal inverter, and the day the battery arrives it is connected and configured.
The other route is a conventional grid inverter plus a converter added later: the battery arrives with its own unit, coupled on the AC side of the installation. It is a valid and widely used solution, but it means two devices, two sets of electronics and two systems that have to understand each other.
Deciding today or redoing it tomorrow
Choosing hybrid today means accepting a contained extra cost for a somewhat more capable unit, one installation and one commissioning. Choosing it tomorrow means a second intervention: another unit on the wall, more cabling, new protections and, in some cases, replacing an inverter that still works perfectly because it cannot take what you want to add.
There is also a less visible cost: every added unit is one more point of failure, one more warranty to manage and, quite often, one more app on your phone. None of this is a drama, but it is honest to put it on the table before deciding, not after.
The small print of battery ready
When a quote says battery ready, these are the questions that separate real preparation from a slogan:
If all five are answered without reaching for the catalogue, you are in good hands. If the answer is that all that will be sorted out later, you have just learnt something about the quote.
- Which specific batteries does the inverter accept? Ask for makes and models in writing, and check they are still in the catalogue.
- Does the battery connect to the inverter itself, or is another unit needed? If another unit is needed, the installation was not that prepared.
- What charge and discharge power does the inverter allow with a battery? Some models cap it so hard the battery ends up limping.
- Is the extension covered in the installation's documentation, or will the legal paperwork need updating?
- Does the monitoring bring the battery into the same app, or will you have two screens that do not talk to each other?
What genuinely gets left ready, even with no battery
Truly preparing an installation for a battery is not just choosing an inverter. It is doing the quiet work that spares you building work tomorrow:

- A reserved physical space, ventilated and shaded, close to the inverter, with a wall or floor able to take the weight.
- Conduits and cabling sized for the battery's needs, even if today they run empty or oversized.
- Room and provision in the electrical panel for the protections the battery will require.
- The communications cable and the meter properly placed, because the battery needs to know at every moment what the house is consuming.
- A documented diagram of what the extension will look like, kept with the rest of the installation's file.
When we recommend hybrid from day one
We recommend hybrid from the start when the consumption curve shows a heavy night that cannot be shifted, and the battery is more a when than an if. Also when the owner is clear about heading towards maximum self-sufficiency and the chosen hybrid model is mature, with a consolidated battery ecosystem and several compatible options.
In those cases, paying today for the electronics you will use tomorrow tends to be the calm decision: one job, one configuration, and an extension that comes down to hanging the battery and connecting it.
When we do not recommend it
If the battery is a maybe someday, a mediocre hybrid is a worse deal than a good grid inverter. The hybrid label does not make a weak unit good, and some ranges only accept the manufacturer's own batteries, at times with an uncertain future or patchy availability. Being tied to a closed catalogue for the whole life of the installation is a risk worth facing squarely.
Nor do we recommend it when night-time consumption is small and shiftable: if your curve shows that programming the water heater and appliances for midday leaves the night nearly empty, the battery will take a long time to justify itself, and the later converter always remains an open path if things change. Hybrid is not a synonym for better: it is a synonym for right for a specific plan.
It is decided with your curve, not with the brochure
Every fork in this article is resolved in the same place: your hourly consumption curve, the one your meter records and you can see on Datadis. It says how much night you have, how much can be moved, and how much would be left for a battery. With that in front of you, the choice between hybrid and grid stops being a brochure debate and becomes arithmetic.

Real compatibility: your inverter and whichever battery exists in a few years
A hybrid inverter does not accept just any battery. Each manufacturer publishes a compatibility list covering three things: the battery's chemistry and voltage (there are low-voltage and high-voltage families, and an inverter usually works with only one of them), the protocol the battery and inverter use to talk to each other, and the firmware version of both. Outside that list, the pair either will not start or runs half-heartedly, with the warranty up in the air.
The edge case is actually the usual case: the hybrid is bought today and the battery arrives years later. By then, the battery model in the brochure may be discontinued and the compatibility list will have changed. An established brand of inverter, with a broad list and several approved battery makers, ages far better than a white-label unit that only accepts its own battery, because the latter ties your future decision to that brand still existing and still selling here.
Our way of covering it is simple: choose inverters with several compatible batteries from different manufacturers, and record in the installation's documentation which options existed at the time of fitting. We cannot promise what a manufacturer will do in five years; we can make sure your only way out does not depend on them.
When the company that installed it no longer answers the phone
It comes up often: a house in Ontinyent with panels fitted a few years ago, the company that installed them has gone, and now the family wants a battery. The problem is rarely the hardware; it is everything around it. The inverter's installer menu is locked with a password nobody wrote down, the monitoring account was created with an email address of the vanished company, and there is no trace of the technical documentation anywhere in the house.
Each of those gaps is paid for when you expand. Setting up a battery means getting into the installer menu, and recovering access depends on how long the manufacturer takes to deal with you. The extension then has to be legalised on top of an installation whose paperwork is missing, which means redoing documents that were already paid for once. None of this is unsolvable, but it turns a job of days into a job of weeks and adds costs that should never have existed.
The lesson applies to anyone with panels today, whether or not a battery is on their mind. Ask for these and keep them safe:
- The installation certificate and the technical report or project
- The single-line diagram of what is actually fitted
- The inverter's make, model and firmware version
- The monitoring account created in your name, not the installer's
- The installer access codes, or a written commitment to hand them over if the relationship ends
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a battery if my inverter is a normal grid inverter?
Yes. The usual route is a converter coupled on the AC side of the installation, with its own electronics. It works well when properly chosen and properly integrated, but it means a second unit, additional protections and the need to review the installation's documentation and legal registration. That is why it should be studied by someone who knows the original installation, with the diagram in front of them, not over the phone.
Does a hybrid inverter perform worse while it has no battery?
It runs normally, like a grid inverter: it converts what the panels produce and serves it to the house. The key is not the label but the quality of the specific unit: a good hybrid without a battery is simply a good inverter, and a mediocre one will be mediocre with or without one. That is why we compare specific models, with their datasheets, rather than brochure categories.
What should I ask for in writing if a quote says battery ready?
Three things at minimum: the list of compatible batteries with makes and models, the charge and discharge power the inverter allows with a battery, and which physical provisions the installation leaves in place, space, cabling and protections. If the installation's documentation also includes the diagram of the future extension, the brochure phrase starts to mean something. Anything not in writing is not part of the quote.
